Mesothelioma is an aggressive, ravaging form of lung cancer generally associated with asbestos exposure. Many symptoms of early stages are similar to those of other conditions--for example, dry coughing, pain on breathing in or out, and shortness of breath may mimic
pleurisy symptoms. Later stage symptoms will be more serious, including fluid in the lungs (pericardial effusion), swelling in the abdomen (ascites), and cachexia.
According to one medical expert,
cachexia refers to an unintentional loss of muscle and body mass. It can be a sign of advanced mesothelioma (the asbestos-related lung cancer) and is a not nutritionally reversible. In other words, no amount of eating---and no matter how healthy it is---will replace the lost muscle. It can be devastating to realize that your body has reached such a state. Make sure you have the best best medical care throughout the course of this illness. Review our mesothelioma website on "
Choosing a doctor."

How do you identify asbestos? This question takes on critical importance for those who previously worked or are working in certain industries and those who work and/or live in older buildings or older homes. Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of a ravaging disease known as mesothelioma lung cancer that so far is fatal and incurable.
Many workers in certain industries were likely to have been unknowingly exposed to asbestos because they did not know how to recognize it in their work. According to the US Government Cancer site,
industries that exposed workers to a high risk of asbestos exposure include shipbuilding, "asbestos mining and milling, manufacturing of asbestos textiles and other asbestos products, insulation work in the construction and building trades, and a variety of other trades. Demolition workers, drywall removers, asbestos removal workers, firefighters, and automobile workers also may be exposed to asbestos fibers. Studies evaluating the cancer risk experienced by automobile mechanics exposed to asbestos through brake repair are limited, but the overall evidence suggests there is no safe level of asbestos exposure."
In the case of older buildings and homes today, it pays to ask the question:
what does asbestos look like? Watch for crumbling coatings on heating and cooling ducts and insulation on hot water pipes. There may be loose asbestos dust inside air vents as well. And if your home has asphalt and fiber-reinforced-cement siding shingles that were installed before 1978, you must exercise great caution when refurbishing and rehabbing. It wasn't until the late 70s that manufacturers and mining companies had to start observing general warnings about the dangers of asbestos---even though those dangers had been well known long before that.
The
history of asbestos is long and full of reports of people becoming sick from being exposed. Yet it's only in the last decade or so that victims have been able to find employers and others legally at fault for having negligently exposed people to such health dangers. The record of success of mesothelioma lawsuits is growing. If you are being treated for mesothelioma, call us as soon as possible. We will help you review the facts of your situation and make a decision about whether it might make sense to file a case to possibly recover compensation. Our phone line is open 24/7 and we will be glad to answer your questions and guide you through
the legal process once you decide to file. 800.443.6353.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of lung cancer, the effects of which can include muscle wasting and fatigue (cachexia) in later stages. And at this point in time, the disease is still incurable. The only known cause of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure at some time during the patient's life---often while working where asbestos fibers were freely present.
A variety of manufacturing, mining and service companies have become involved in mesothelioma lawsuits in the past ten years or so. Some of those companies whose workers have had an increased incidence of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases include:
- manufacturers such as UNARCO, Johns-Manville, and Philip Carey
- service stations where workers installed or repaired brakes or clutches
- manufacturers that are indirectly involved with asbestos products such as Squibb, P&G, Carborundum, Ford, General Motors, Hercules, Hoffman-LaRoche, Merck
- naval and other shipyards
- oil refineries such as Chevron, Exxon, Mobil
- construction industry jobs

There can be so many twists and turns in the laws surrounding asbestos lawsuits and mesothelioma litigation that it's critical to have an experienced lawyer who knows the angles.
And when a lawsuit is successful, there may be other legal maneuvering regarding who must pay and how much. For example, one of the companies that has been sued for exposing its workers to asbestos risk via a subsidiary company is Corning, Inc. In the 1950s Corning acquired Corhart Refractories Co., which made and sold a special type of brick used in steel furnaces.
According to the www.allbusiness.com/legal/ website, some of Corhart's customers bought a paper spacer material that included asbestos. And many asbestos-exposure actions were later filed against Corning, which faced additional potential liability due to a subsidiary making and selling a pipe insulation product called Unibestos that was made with asbestos.
In a recent court case two of Corning's insurance companies sued the company, claiming the language of the policies indicated that each individual occurrence of asbestos exposure should be considered separate---and thus force Corning to pay the full deductible for each case filed. Their petition was denied by the New York Supreme Court in July, 2010.
So if you have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma, call us right away to talk about how best to get through the legal process of filing for possible compensation. 800.443.6353. You can also contact us at

Mesothelioma lung cancer is a ravaging disease that is associated with asbestos exposure. It quickly robs its victims and their families of their quality of life, then leads to death within a few years. And so far there is no cure. In many cases, victims received their deadly exposure while on the job.
Mesothelioma lawsuit settlements have already reached well into the hundreds of millions, and more will continue to be awarded. Though nothing can replace individuals in the hearts of their loved ones, some plaintiffs reach negotiated settlements before trial that can take care of their families for many years to come. Some receive significant judgments through the courts. Either way, when you look for mesothelioma legal advice, make sure you find a law firm that has taken on this type of litigation successfully and gotten its clients significant compensation.
What should you look for in a attorney? After finding out about the law firm's previous successes, make sure you feel respected and listened to by the individual attorney. You're already going through one of the most traumatic times in your life
living with mesothelioma. Dealing with a lawyer who isn't responsive to your questions is a burden you don't need. Ask if your case will be examined individually rather than lumped in with others. And make sure your attorney works on a contingency basis---that is, you pay nothing upfront. Any fees are taken out of any settlement that's awarded.

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive cancer that usually begins in your chest cavity, but it may also begin in your abdomen where it is called peritoneal mesothelioma. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to correctly diagnose peritoneal mesothelioma early on because of the lack of definitive symptoms. In later stages you may begin to accumulate a large amount of fluid in your abdominal cavity---called ascites. Treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma will depend on the type you have (several types have been identified such as biphasic and cystic---which is considered somewhat less aggressive) and the stage, but it normally consists of some combination of chemotherapy with pemetrexed and cisplatin, and surgery to reduce the tumor and remove cancerous cells.
No natural causes of mesothelioma in the peritoneum have yet been identified, regardless of the type. This disease has so far always been found to be associated with
asbestos exposure at some point in the patient's life. It may originate in the abdomen or it may also develop from pleural mesothelioma cells migrating into the peritoneum.
Regardless of how
mesothelioma begins, you deserve the best medical care. And you deserve the best mesothelioma legal advice you can obtain. Call us at HendlerLaw and we will help you review your history to identify potential sources of exposure to asbestos. Then we will advise you of your legal rights and help you decide whether to file a lawsuit---at no charge---to possibly recover compensation. 800.443.6353.
Following a four-year investigation, Marco Island and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency agreed to a settlement in an asbestos-handling case. The agreement follows demands by city residents—worried about asbestos exposure—to investigate how the hazardous material was handled. The settlement is to be in lieu of formal enforcement actions against Marco and Quality Enterprises for six alleged violations of the Clean Air Act relating to improper asbestos handling when widening and adding sewer lines to Collier Boulevard beginning in 2005. Under the agreement, no fines will be paid by the city and no admission of guilt is required by either party per the agreement. The companies will have to pay an $81,000 fine and the EPA is to affirm that the park site was properly cleaned.
The investigation examined how Quality Enterprises, one of the city’s contractors, handled pipe containing asbestos. The Environmental Protection Agency’s findings included:
• Improper inspection of the area containing asbestos;
• Failure to remove asbestos before disturbing or breaking up the material;
• Failure to have a person on staff trained in asbestos regulations;
• Failure to dispose of the asbestos “as soon as practical.
Marco Island and Quality Enterprises were also accused of not providing notice and failing to wet the material as required by asbestos regulations. The EPA has developed specific steps that detail the proper way to deal with asbestos materials. Removal of asbestos must be done under special, cautious procedures. Asbestos has been scientifically linked to deadly diseases including lung cancer and mesothelioma, a fatal cancer of the protective lining covering many of the body’s internal organs. Most people that develop mesothelioma have worked in jobs where they breathed in asbestos fibers at some point in their lives.
Failure to provide adequate protection, warning, or a safe working environment has been the basis of many asbestos lawsuits. HendlerLaw is a nationally recognized law firm that has brought justice to victims of asbestos exposure over the years. Mesothelioma lawyers have been successful in obtaining large settlements and verdicts against defendants who knew or should have known of asbestos risks but did little, or nothing, to protect others.
Asbestos is everywhere, including a run-down building that formerly housed a local historical society in Pennsylvania. The building, owned by the non-profit historical society will be demolished because of the society’s inability to pay for proper maintenance. The demolition will cost Washington County officials about $250,000. The excessive cost is due to the fact that the structure is contaminated with asbestos. Special precautions must be taken whenever asbestos is removed from any asbestos containing structure. According to the EPA, up until the 1970s, many types of building products and insulation materials used in homes contained asbestos. Disturbed asbestos-containing products such as insulation, fireproofing and acoustical materials are among the main sources of asbestos exposure. The removal of asbestos posts potential health risks for many people in the area, if done incorrectly.
Inhaled asbestos fibers can cause serious health problems. Asbestos is linked to diseases that include asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. The American Cancer Society lists exposure to asbestos as the main risk factor for developing mesothelioma. Most people that develop mesothelioma have worked in jobs where they breathed in asbestos fibers at some point in their lives. Mesothelioma can take 25-40 years to develop after the initial asbestos exposure.
The truth about asbestos exposure has been known and mostly hidden from the American public since the early 20th Century. If you or anyone close to you has developed the disease, chances are it is due to asbestos exposure at work or home.
HendlerLaw, a specialized mesothelioma cancer law firm has successfully litigated many asbestos lawsuits against manufacturers of asbestos containing products. Contact us with no obligation at 1-800-443-6353.
You may have seen this long word, mesothelioma, in the newspapers or on television and wondered about it. What is mesothelioma? It is a unique form of lung cancer that's usually connected with a patient's history of previous asbestos exposure---either from working in a place that mined or used asbestos or from living in or near an area where such work was done.
But the simple definition of the term doesn't describe what patients must endure with the
symptoms of mesothelioma. These can include difficulty breathing, coughing, chest pain, abdominal fluid retention, and many more. In addition, the disease is highly resistant to the typical cancer treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy and progresses rapidly to more advanced stages.
When some patients learn that their disease might have been prevented if they'd known about the dangers of asbestos, they suffer the additional burden of wondering if their employer may have known that workers were being exposed to asbestos on the job. The only way to resolve that question is to work with an experienced attorney who can give you expert mesothelioma legal advice. Your attorney will work with you to recover the relevant details of your work history so that you can determine whether it might make sense to file a lawsuit to seek compensation.

Making sure mesothelioma clients are clearly informed, and feel as comfortable as possible during depositions is paramount, in my opinion. I recently gave a presentation at the
Plaintiffs Asbestos Lawyers Symposium that took place in Las Vegas May 5th-7th.
Litigation communications expert Katherine James, of Act Of Communication, was my co-presenter. We discussed strategies for mesothelioma cancer attorneys to use to communicate with mesothelioma clients about what will happen at their deposition and how to put them at ease to
testify more comfortably and with less anxiety. When a mesothelioma patient decides to bring a mesothelioma lawsuit, a key event is his or her deposition. Because that can be a stressful event, its important for clients to be at ease about the process. This is an important aspect of providing
mesothelioma advice during the litigation process. If you'd like to learn more about the deposition process, feel free to contact me at 512-439-3202 or

That's why it's critical to receive the best legal advice you can. You'll want to work with someone who has successfully navigated these complex types of cases many times. Several drugs have demonstrated some effectiveness when dealing with the asbestos-related disease known as mesothelioma. Because those drugs have such limited capabilities, however, doctors are always searching for new and better alternatives. As of today, one of the most common drug combinations in use is pemetrexed plus cisplatin. In some cases doctors may substitute carboplatin for cisplatin because it is less toxic, but it requires larger doses for the same effectiveness.
Carboplatin side effects usually involve a significant drop in red blood cells and may also include those of many other chemotherapy drugs:
- nausea and/or vomiting
- diarrhea
- mouth sores
- hair loss or thinning
- tiredness, loss of energy
In addition, some patients have been known to suffer kidney problems or issues with the inner ear among their carboplatin side effects.

When you receive a
mesothelioma diagnosis, you begin a long journey. It began, possibly many years ago, when you were exposed to some asbestos risk, either on the job or in your living environment. Early symptoms can include coughing, difficulty breathing, and can then lead to cachexia (general debilitation, muscle wasting, fatigue, etc.). No matter what symptoms appear first, your main consideration is to find a medical care team that is very familiar with this disease and whose members can give you the information and the treatments that are best suited to where you are in the process.
Your doctor may recommend that you undergo a series of tests to help your care team members understand what stage your disease is in and help them recommend treatments that might to relieve your pain or discomfort.
As you and your family learn to live with these lung cancer effects, you will also want to consider getting
mesothelioma legal advice from a highly qualified and experienced professional who has successfully helped other victims file asbestos lawsuits to seek compensation. Don't wait. We can help you determine the deadline by which you must file mesothelioma litigation in order not to lose your opportunity. Our experienced mesothelioma trial attorneys will work with you to discover whether you may have a good chance of recovering compensation. Call us day or night at 800.443.6353.
Yes, even though legislation is in place prohibiting the use of asbestos in most manufacturing operations, the stuff was used extensively in industry and in construction materials for many decades before the truth came out. That means that your older home, your office in an older building, or your child's classroom in an older school could still be made with materials that contain significant amounts of asbestos.
Does this mean you should panic? No, but it does make sense to be attentive. Take a walk around the office, the school, and your home. Look for roofing, siding, tile, insulation and any other materials that are crumbling or producing dust. What does asbestos look like? It's hard to describe it exactly because it comes in so many different materials. You can see some
photographs of asbestos-containing materials here.

The critical piece is that if you see crumbling, it's important to check. Do not try to determine for yourself if the dust is contaminated--if you do you'll be increasing your own asbestos exposure. Keep friends, colleagues, and family members away from crumbling materials, and get a professional asbestos risk assessment done as soon as possible. With the number of asbestos lawsuits climbing as more victims develop mesothelioma (a rare asbestos-related disease with symptoms similar to lung cancer effects), protect yourself from ever having to be put in that position.
If you have mesothelioma, hopefully you've received solid advice on
choosing your care team. It's critical to have experienced medical professionals who understand the signs, symptoms, and typical progress of this ravaging disease. Mesothelioma has lung cancer effects that can result in a host of symptoms. It can be one of the causes of pericardial effusion (fluid around your heart), abdominal fluid retention (ascites),
cachexia (muscle wasting, loss of appetite, etc.), and/or
pleurisy symptoms (sharp chest pain, coughing, problems breathing, and so on).
And just as importantly---for your own peace of mind and the well-being of your family---you should consider whether you might discuss your situation with a mesothelioma trial attorney. Only a qualified and experienced trial attorney---someone who understands what you're going through and knows how to navigate
the legal process---can give you sound mesothelioma legal advice on whether to file a mesothelioma lawsuit.

Mesothelioma is a very difficult disease--an aggressive form of lung cancer, the effects of which are still usually fatal despite years of research into cures. There are not a great many mesothelioma causes: other than extremely rare cases,
asbestos exposure at some point in a person's life is the main culprit among mesothelioma causes.
Patients who develop mesothelioma may experience any number of symptoms. They can include abdominal fluid retention (abdominal ascites), or pleurisy symptoms such as coughing, sudden and intense chest pain, rapid shallow breathing, or difficulty breathing (caused by pleural effusion--fluid collecting in the space around the lungs).
The key to prolonging survival with mesothelioma is finding medical professionals who are experienced with the asbestos connection and understand how the symptoms can be mistaken for other diseases and conditions.
Another important consideration is to speak with a qualified
mesothelioma trial attorney who can help you review your history and determine whether you might be able to recover compensation for your suffering. Hendlerlaw is a mesothelioma asbestos law firm that specializes in helping victims---at no cost---decide if it might make sense for them to file their own mesothelioma lawsuits. Our fees come only if there is a settlement or award. Please call us with any questions or concerns. We are available 24/7 at 800.443.6353.
Carboplatin is one of several chemotherapy drugs that's commonly used to treat various types of lung cancer, including mesothelioma, the type associated with asbestos exposure. Two companies have recently announced their researchers believe they've found more effective ways to use carboplatin by giving it in combination with different drugs.
The upside of carboplatin is that it works by preventing cells from making DNA, which then slows down the rate at which cancer cells can reproduce. The downside, as with many chemotherapy drugs, is that carboplatin side effects can be very uncomfortable since it works by killing cells, some of which are perfectly healthy. The hope for all cancer treatments is to develop antibodies or other helper agents that will allow much smaller doses of chemotherapy to do the same work.
If you believe you've been exposed to
asbestos at any time in your life and you develop symptoms of mesothelioma such as a lasting cough, difficulty breathing, abdominal fluid retention, or other lung-related problems, see a qualified physician immediately. And don't hesitate to call us if your doctor suspects mesothelioma. We are experienced in helping victims find out if they may have a reasonable chance of recovering compensation through a
mesothelioma lawsuit. Call us night or day at 800.443.6353.
When they scheduled to tear down some old homes in Detroit, city officials decided to
ignore the risks of asbestos during the project. When released through breaking or crushing asbestos-containing materials, the fibers can get stuck in human lungs and eventually cause mesothelioma, a rare but deadly form of lung cancer. Officials knew that federal laws require buildings scheduled for demolition to be tested for asbestos ahead of time.
What does asbestos look like? It's very hard to identify unless you're an expert. This fire- and heat-resistant material is made up of tiny fibers that are embedded in building and other materials that have been used for many decades. You might find it in insulation, textured paint, stove-pot pads, vinyl floors, electric stoves, materials used to insulate hot water and steam pipes, and in the cement used in roofing and siding shingles.
Asbestos use for commercial buildings was not banned in the U.S. until 1989. So any time an older structure is being torn down, there is danger that asbestos may be hidden in some of the materials. Since asbestos is the only known factor among mesothelioma causes, you can be putting yourself, your family, and your neighbors at risk by breaking down those materials and releasing the asbestos fibers. If you have crumbling insulation around pipes in your basement, for example, call as soon as possible for a professional asbestos risk assessment. Do not attempt to handle the situation on your own.
